Project Description:

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport Administration (ANC) plans to remove the fence along the east side of Lake Hood in the Turnagain neighborhood of Anchorage, Alaska. The existing fence (see image to the right) is in various stages of disrepair and no longer serves its original purpose. Maintenance of this fence is no longer included in the airport budget.

Due to its close proximity to residential parcels, many adjacent property owners have come to rely on this fence as part of their personal property boundaries. However, the fence was never intended or maintained for residential use; its purpose was exclusively related to airport operations. After the installation of a wildlife control fence closer to Lake Hood in the early 2000s, the existing east boundary fence became unnecessary. The potential for safety hazards increases as the fence continues to deteriorate without regular maintenance. The fence is being removed by ANC because it is not required, is costly to maintain and is a safety liability.
